JoelG Tutoring: About Me

My Approach

All my tuition has now moved online but my approach to teaching always has been and always will be the same. I like to explore the reasons and proofs behind mathematical principles as opposed to just teaching facts. I believe that this gives students the edge when it comes to complex questions and tricky variations that exam boards enjoy including in their papers. Knowledge is good but understanding is better. I make my lessons fun and engaging and never move on until a topic has been grasped fully. You'd be surprised how much you can learn to love a subject that you used to hate! All it takes is the right teaching method.
Don't believe me? Give it a try yourself!

Why Online?

For the first couple of years, I stuck to mainly tutoring in person. I thought that this was the best way to help people learn as I could view my students' workings and could easily see where they were tripping up and where there was room for improvement. At that time, I was only using FaceTime for my online students and, although I was successfully able to help many, it never quite felt as smooth as it could have been. Then I started using Zoom.

This app/website completely changed my view of online tuition because of its easy connectivity, universal availability and screen sharing features. This means that, not only can I now share my own workings easily with my student, I can also see their workings and edit them! On top of this, I am able to share and annotate online papers in real time to show my students exactly where they need to look and how to go about solving the problem in the question. These features mean that online tuition is no longer just a decent replacement for meeting in person, it's actually an improvement!

The Zoom app is available to download for free or you can use the web browser version. It doesn't require fast internet speeds or a fancy computer and you can even join using your phone or tablet. The popularity of this service has meant that I am now too busy to return to in-person tuition and I have been able to help students improve their maths skills from all over the country and even abroad! If you would like to try an online lesson, contact me by filling out an enquiry at the bottom of this page or by selecting "Book a Lesson Now!" Use the code "ONLINE50" in your first email to me to get 50% off your first session.
